About IGRSM

IGRSM, formerly known as Malaysian Remote Sensing Society (MRSS), was formed in July, 1995. Its overall objective is to support and facilitate development of geospatial and remote sensing technologies in the country.

Since its formation, IGRSM has embarked in several activities aimed towards further promoting the use of the technology, strengthening government-private sector interaction, encouraging more publications of R&D results and keeping members duly informed of geospatial and remote sensing activities within and outside the country.

Challenges & New Opportunities for LiDAR in Malaysia

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is one of the most recent and useful active remote sensing tools. It provides accurate horizontal and vertical information by direct time measurement of a short laser pulse after reflection on the Earth surface. LiDAR technology is not new in the Malaysian geospatial industry. The ability of LiDAR data to accurately characterize terrain has led to various sectors in the country to utilize this technology for various applications, including for engineering and infrastructure, environment and disaster, and natural resource. However, there are some challenges faced by technology operators and users in Malaysia in terms of data acquisition, processing and quality control. During the last years, a new generation of airborne laser scanners called full-waveform LiDAR has been developed, creating new opportunities for research and applications in the remote sensing community to extract more information from LiDAR data. This talk will discuss new developments in LiDAR survey technology, and highlight the challenges and new opportunities for the technology in Malaysia based on the experiences of Ground Data Solutions R&D Sdn. Bhd. as a pioneer in the airborne LiDAR survey industry and the most experienced LiDAR service provider in the region.

Venue: Dewan Taklimat, Level 2, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Selangor
Date: 19 January 2017 (Thursday)
Time: 10.00 – 11.30 am
